This morning we left La Junta, Colorado to head for Colorado Springs. We took route 50 to 25 to Colorado Springs and then 24 to the Garden of the Gods.
We got up and packed everything up to head out. It was a bit colder than we thought this morning and we needed to stop to get our motorcycle jackets on. We stopped at Denny’s in Pueblo for some coffee and breakfast. Then headed out again for Colorado Springs. We went straight to the Garden of the Gods. WOW it was amazing. Pictures will not do it justice. You just have to go see it for yourself. After the Garden of the Gods we decided to head to Pike’s Peak and drove through Manitou Springs where we saw a Hemp Shop. We didn’t stop we drove on past. When we got to the Pikes Peak Highway, we paid our highway fee to go up. It was $12 per person and I had a $2 coupon I got offline so it only cost us $22. We had to unhook the motorcycle trailer and leave it at the bottom. Then we proceeded up the highway it was quite scary at times. Going up so high and winding roads with no guard rails. I am sure it is scary in a car too, but you really see everything on a motorcycle. We had downloaded an audio tour on itunes and listened to it on the way up. I am glad we did because it pointed some things out that we may not of seen and also gave us a lot of history. The trip up takes 50 minutes to an hour.
The Pikes Peak Highway is a 19-mile toll road that runs from Cascade, Colorado to the summit of Pikes Peak in El Paso County, at an altitude of 14,115 feet. As we reached the summit we actually went through the clouds and as luck would have it shortly after we arrived at the summit it rained a bit. It didn’t rain too much. At the summit you definitely feel the effects of not as much oxygen. We took in some of the amazing views went inside the gift shop. Took some pictures and decided to head back down. After coming down we headed toward Buena Vista to pick up Route 50 to head toward Utah. On our way we passed over the Continental Divide. We drove to Gunnison, Colorado where we are tenting tonight at the Mesa Campground.
As I type this we are sitting in a tent about to weather a huge storm I am afraid. Total Miles for the day 340.
